Frequently Asked Questions
How will online lessons be carried out between tutors and students?
All tutoring lessons are taught online through a virtual classroom. Once a student has been accepted into the program, they will have access to make an account to access the virtual classroom. Students and tutors will communicate in the virtual classroom through voice/chat exchange. An online whiteboard is used to explain academic functions. All lessons are recorded to give students the option to review anything taught during the lesson that they may have missed. For the privacy of our students, we do not allow webcam usage between students and tutors for lessons. Therefore, lesson recordings will only consist of what has been written on the whiteboard and the tutor's and student's voices. *Students will have access to all previous lessons without the verbal exchanged part between students and tutors.
Will my child's personal information be shared with tutors?
The privacy and safety of our students are important to us. The Glisteners Foundation does not share students' personal information such as last names, addresses, phone numbers, geographical locations, or schools with tutors. Tutors will only have access to a student's first name and the designated subject/subjects with which the student will need assistance.
What if my child does not have access to the internet or a computer at home?
Parents who have a child without access to the internet and a computer at home should reach out to their child's school for permission to make arrangements for their child to receive lessons after school using a computer owned by the school. (e.g., a computer in the computer labs) Another alternative for parents is to use public library computers. Please remember that students will still need a headset with a working microphone since most libraries do not permit external volume usage on computers.
What if my child 's school does not have a counselor?
The principal may submit letters confirming a student's eligibility if a counselor is unavailable. Only letters containing the school's original header logo/crest and email from the principal's official school email will be accepted. The Glisteners Foundation will reject correspondences from personal emails confirming a student's eligibility.
What if I have a second child who I wish to enroll, but they already have a sibling in the program? Do I need to submit an application again?
All new students must submit a new application, even if they already have an existing sibling within the program. All application supplements must be received for the student to be considered. (student application, counselor letter of confirmation)
How many hours of tutoring a week are students allowed?
For the fairness of all students, each student is only allowed a maximum of 3 hours per week for tutoring assistance.
What if my child needs extra hours?
If a student needs extra tutoring, it is up to the tutor if they are willing to give them extended hours. If a student requires additional help, they must ask the assigned tutor ahead of time to see if the tutor can give them the spare time. It may not be possible if the tutor already has other scheduled students in line. Sometimes, an instructor may permit a student into a group study. In that case, a student may be placed in a group study of one or more students for their extended hours. Please check with your assigned tutor ahead of time whether or not the assigned tutor will be able to provide any extension and, if so, what type (e.g., one on one or a group study).
Can my child use their 3 hours in one session?
To receive maximum benefit from tutoring, students should split their hours into two or three tutoring sessions to receive additional assistance with new assignments. Students can sign up for one-hour (60 minutes) sessions three times a week or one-and-a-half-hour (90 minutes) sessions twice a week.
If my child does not use their 3 hours in a week, can those hours be merged into the weeks after?
No, because hours are available for students who need tutoring only. Hours are refreshed weekly and are forward-moving. If your child did not use all 3 hours that week, those would be considered finished.
If my child is already enrolled in the program, do I need to submit a new application next year?
A yearly eligibility renewal bonds all students; parents must have their child's school counselor submit a letter of confirmation regarding their child's eligibility every new school year.
